Additional local activities

Put your endurance skills to the test as you embark on an 18-day hiking excursion from Eden to Addo. The hike is considered by some as the longest, if not toughest hiking trail in South Africa. Regarded as a “mega” hike, the Eden to Addo trail entails an extensive haul from Knysna to Addo including a trek across Addo Elephant National Park—one of the largest national parks in southern Africa. In between the trail weaves through the Baviaanskloof wilderness and the many folds of the varied Cape mountain ranges—Tsitsikamma, Langkloof, Couga, Groot Winterhoek, and Klein Winterhoek. Hikers will marvel at the contrast between the coastal topography and the densely populated wilderness—stocked with biodiverse vegetation and rugged terrain.

Woody Cape, Alexandria State Forest is where you’ll find the starting point to the five-day, 80-kilometer “luxury” excursion known as the Diaz Trail. Highlights of this trek include wild and deserted beaches, the largest shifting dune fields in the southern hemisphere, shipwrecks, and the Diaz Cross. This “slackpacker,” guided hike, is a must for those who want the gruel and grind of a real beach hike, yet still want to sleep in luxury come nightfall. The entire trail winds its way along the beaches of the Wild Coast, via Cannon Rocks, the Diaz Cross, Kenton-on-Sea, and on to the Great Fish River mouth.

For a circular hike through the Woody Cape area of the Addo Elephant National Park, head to the Alexandria Hiking Trail. This trail is approximately 32 kilometers long, stretched over a two-day journey. Hikers will need to be relatively fit, as all participants are expected to carry their own gear and supplies. This trail is well signposted and designed for a non-guided trek, requiring a minimum of three hikers to begin your quest—with a maximum of 12 participants at any one time during the journey. Be prepared to be wowed at the awesome vegetation and outstanding variety of birds and animals you will see as you traverse the outstanding dunes of Alexandria.
